ISHIHIME FIC CONTEST! ("Ishi no Ishida desu", by Kit.)

Also for the fic contest at bleachness, and partly because SOMEONE had to write it. I do love my puns, after all. Anyway, roughly at the beginning of the Hueco Mundo (second arrancar invasion) arc.

Apologies to Simon and Garfunkel. Many, many apologies.

If we were to lose either those loved ones or the things and practices that unite us with them, we would fall into utter despair unless or until time would repair our losses in some way.

-Albert Borgmann

I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Uryuu had lost track of time, in that place; he was hidden away, being shot at by his father.

What time was it? What day, what season - ?

Exhausted... he was exhausted.

"You fool! Are you trying to get shot? You're not lively enough!"

"You can't be a Quincy again if you don't even know how to be a bloody human first! Christ, Uryuu, haven't you learned anything?!"

Don't talk of love,
But I've heard the words before;
It's sleeping in my memory.

A certain person's warm smile... the casual cheerfulness, even while undertaking a mission in Soul Society, facing things she didn't quite understand.

The sincere desire to help people - one could see it in her eyes.

But those eyes... weren't for him.

He pushed his glasses up again - they glinted, and he ran.

I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved, I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

He had to keep running. It meant survival.

Uryuu did have to wonder - what lay behind those powers of rejection? Rejecting herself? At what cost did such abilities have... on such a fragile person...?

He wondered this strictly academically, of course. As a thought exercise, a strategy exercise.

He was a Quincy again. Strategy always meant survival, and he couldn't afford to lose the Quincy powers again.

He was so tired...

A creaking, and an all-too-familiar bucket hat.

Urahara stepped out, his fan obscuring much of his face, looking around.

"Your father isn't around, is he?"

I touch no one and no one touches me...

"If Inoue-san needs to be saved, I'll go by myself!"

He was Ishida Uryuu, the last Quincy.

He didn't need to go with anyone else. Didn't need to rely on anyone else.

That's what it meant to be a Quincy, wasn't it?

"...haven't you learned anything?!"

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

Notes: The "Ishi" in "Ishida" is spelled with the kanji for "stone" or "rock". However, it can also be written [意思」, meaning "will" or "consciousness". So, a bit of a pun. My apologies. ^^
