Manga-ka draw for Japan; VOLUME 49 OMG

SE mangaka have done art to show support for Japan: http://bit.ly/dMMRHW

And well, look at this. Kubo-sensei drew a picture of Ichigo in shinigami clothes reaching his hand out to offer assistance to earthquake victims:

(click to see the wallpaper version: http://www.shonenjump.com/j/message/kabegami/bleach_1920.jpg )

I suppose that people who were telling amateur artists and fanartists on dA that it was disrespectful to draw art following Japan's tragedy can just be embarrassed now.

And if you haven't seen it yet, Sensei took a pic of Volume 49--it's Ichigo and oh wow, the style! It's so different and wow, just wow: http://plixi.com/p/86672242  We were all expecting Ramen Guy but it's Ichigo with the title "The Lost Agent" and this puts an emphasis on Ichigo's "lostness" in this arc. Also, emo Ichigo poem? I CAN NOT WAIT. :3

Heavy chiaroscuro like that will always be associated in my mind with stylized Gainax art like TTGL and PSG.

Wow... why showing support with writing/drawing could be disrespectful?
_debbiechan__debbiechan_ on March 25th, 2011 03:54 pm (UTC)

I dunno. But people find stuff to criticize. Esp on Deviant Art. People get all squirmy there. And in fandom in general. I dunno. -_-

Lol I love sensei's choice of clothe for Ichigo in that sketch. So having a shinigami assisting help isn't meant to be seen as a bad thing :P he looks really heroic and sweet.

For vol. 49, I cannot wait for the poem.

I'm salivating for the poem. Yeah, he doesn't have sideburns in the big Jump pic so I guess it's not current arc or future!Ichigo but past glory!Ichigo. He's so handsome and heroic. I love him here.

The art in the volume cover suits the new arc perfectly.

Wow, I love that art. It's really just... touching in a hopeful way. Ichigo looks ... I dunno. Beautiful? That's usually cheesy to say about a guy, but he really does - it's a happy and beautiful art with lovely movement.

What a fantastic show of support. When your friends and your country is down, you do what you do best to help them up. If art is your talent, you do art (which is not to say that Kubo and the other mangaka haven't done more than that. Kubo's been tweeting info like crazy since the disaster.)

I guess I'm biased, but I like Kubo's piece the best. Great composition and yes, Ichigo looks so upbeat and heroic.

The cover of 49 is just awesome and yeah, I can't wait for the poem either.

I really like Kubo's drawings, though I wish Chrome could look a little less helpless and a little more helpful in the KHR pic.

I get what people were saying last time with the Rukia/Ichigo shinigami fanart for quake victims, but I didn't think it was very fair to the artist. Rukia and Ichigo identify as shinigami, that's who they are and that's how readers picture them as well. It's only suitable that when they're out helping people and doing good that they'd be in shinigami clothes instead of just regular outfits, despite the implications.

oh kubo ♥ ; u ; i love artists because they use the mediums as a sort of encouragement asjfh heheeh

uhm regarding to the stuff about the criticism about the fanarts - it was mostly because people were drawing things like japan from hetalia being bullied or something right after the disaster. personally, i dont mind but a few of my friends had some opinions about it... they thought it was disrespectful because this is not the time to be referring to the people of japan as a character from hetalia or smthing and tbh i agree.

thanks for sharing bro

Some people say that good art should stare at you from any point...Kubo you`re an Artist.

I didn't find the shinigami garb disrespectful, just kinda morbid. X) I mean, you're trying to help the SURVIVORS and you depict a DEATH GOD/SOUL REAPER offering the an unseen person in the viewers direction his hand... which would indicate that whomever they are reaching for either has very high spiritual powers or is dead...

I know everyone means well, but the implication is still there. And it's kind of hilarious that they didn't think of it considering their otherwise extensive knowledge of Bleach. That Kubo did it do is kinda facepalmy IMO. Dude, have you read your own manga? XD

The cover looks awesome though; looooooooooooooove the heavy shadows.

Honestly, I was expecting Getsuga!Ichigo for once... Still, I love the art. Sensei's style has evolved so much... *0*

And drawing to show support isn't disrespectful. But, what happened on DA was NUTS. Most of these "artworks" were patched together in a hurry, and most of the were the SAME thing.

I suppose that people who were telling amateur artists and fanartists on dA that it was disrespectful to draw art following Japan's tragedy can just be embarrassed now.

I was taken aback when I learned that, because hey, one of the first thing that was sprout in Japan was the meme "draw for Japan", in which several artists and fanartists have participated. There's also a French website dedicated to that, where artists sell their drawings to help Japan.

Really, guys. It's to cheer up people, and make them smile, comfort them while the situation is so disastrous for them. What is so hard to understand? It's just people connecting through art, when words can't convey what we feel. You can not understand words properly in another language, but you'll always understand a drawing.

Also, Ichigo in shinigami outfit, it's been so long, I feel sad ;_;
nivek01nivek01 on March 26th, 2011 12:18 am (UTC)
Agreed. People try to help out during disasters in different ways. Some join the red cross or the peace corps or something and actually go to the disaster area to help clean and rebuild. Some people donate tons of money to relief efforts. But not everyone can, but they still want to help out. Like someone said above, if you're talent is drawing, and you want to help out, then find a way to have your drawings support the people of Japan.
And anyway, why waste your time trying to bash other people's work? Okay, so with some twisted logic you don't think it's respectful. Ignore it and do something of your own.

T-T

Some of the fanarts made me teary. Kubo's looks really good. The Yotsubato one is a favorite along with the "成瀬芳貴先生", which I'm not familiar with, but it's very touching.

Yana-sensei did something too it looks like, but I find Sebastian displaying sympathy to be more disturbing than anything to do with Shinigami. You know he doesn't have sympathy, it's a lie. Same goes for Ciel.
_debbiechan__debbiechan_ on March 25th, 2011 06:40 pm (UTC)

I saw it as a gesture from her, not necessarily the characters. But yeah, a lot of the arts made me a little teary-eyed.

OMG! I'm loving all the art *bathes in so much Ichigo goodness* and it is not even my birthday ^___~

Ichigo is not being so popular for his "stupid" choices, specially lately (I'm starting to really feel like the true Orihime fans now lol, I totally understand the frustrations *hugs* ) *sigh* but I do wuv him and I know he'll get back to his senses soon enough...

I love Sensei's little scene of Ichigo landing and looking back to lend a warm welcoming hand to whoever needs it. It not only shows immense support, but it also encompasses Ichigo's empathic nature and personality. It is the kind of altruistic thing he would do if he was real. Also enjoying one of his very rare honest, charming & warm smiles. Who wouldn't want to be encouraged by him?.
All the mangakas art in general was really nice and don't get why anybody would think that they could be disrespectful (!??). It would be if they were having crude jokes or something irreverent in nature.

Ichigo in the cover looks very handsome, with all those hard shadows and mature look to him. However it does look lonely and has melancholic eyes. That "LOST AGENT" most definitely refers to Ichigo himself. He is very lost as I've said before. Me too can't wait for that POEM o__O !
I wonder if I could share this pics?

More gorgeous art coming up!
Have more magnificent art, courtesy of the mangaka affiliated with Hakusensha (this includes all the mangaka whose works are serialized in LaLa, Hana to Yume, Young Animal etc): clicky!

PS: This is not slow or wonky internet friendly (but the art more than makes up for some terribad loading times) so you stand warned. <3

Ah, thanks Sea for the wonderful link. It takes a bit for them to show up, but they are heartwarming. I might not know Japanese, but the messages are incredibly encouraging, full of smiles, flowers, warmth, candle vigils, etc... Very beautiful and full of solidarity.
