'Ship manifesto!
We are allowed to advertise our own fanworks here, right? So, I wrote a 'shipper's manifesto for the possibly oldest threesome in the Bleach fandom, IchiRenRuki. (Are there any contenders? I'd be interested in having this conversation! :D)

You can read it on the ship_manifesto community here:

OH thanks for posting this! I saw it in my ship_manifesto box yesterday and read it this morning and it kicks ass. There IS a wonderful first name intimacy in this trio--it's irresistible, my first OT3 in Bleach and after watching FTB, I got the stirrings again. I love this trio.

And this:

5. Love Is a Doing Word: Why Ship Them?

Because they're fun. Because they're hot. Because it makes sense. Because they're good together.

Hope your manifesto inspires some arts. I've seen a few adorable ones and a few hot hot ones but not any recently. I remember when Kubo drew IchiRenRuki all the time... hmmmm, maybe we'll see the three of them again soon when the action turns to the Yammy fight in the manga!

Thank you--and you're also welcome.

Well, I'm certainly secretly entertaining a hope that writing this will engender some interest in this trio. I do love them so (among a great many other pairings), and indeed, FtB brings the IRR vibes, too.

It would just about make my entire month to see them fighting side by side. Here's hoping.

Blah. Kubo killed RenRuki at the end of the SS arc.

I used to like them, but not anymore. Especially since a certain side of the fandom spitships renruki just to get Rukia out of Ichigo's way. [and then grossed me out].

IchiRukiRen used to shine though during the SS arc; it was a great trio. It just died on itself oO Not saying that Renji's feelings died, but Rukia's feelings got a lot more clearer, so yeah... it watered down the ship a lot, which is why IchiRukiRen doesn't work anymore for me *shrugs* And Renji became kind of blah too, which makes him un-shippable with Rukia in my eyes. XD

The essay looks nice though - I didn't have the time to read it, nor will I have the time to, since I already wish to have 40 hours a day >___> I just skimmed through it. There are probably a lot of points I'd disagree with though _o/

Just this point for example:
"I dare you to tell which of them says that. My answer is, of course, that both of them do." [the 'I swore on my soul' scene].

Of course, both did, but Ichigo was the one who said it first and gave enough determination to Renji to also say it. This is what I mean when I say that Ichigo's feelings and determination always outshines Renji's. XD

"As much as I love the IRR threesome, I know it's purely a fannish match-up. I can 'ship it with unadulterated glee, free of the burden of proving that my 'ship is More Canon Than Yours."

I'm quoting myself here. I don't ship it to undermine anything else, I ship it because I enjoy it. The whole point of a 'ship manifesto is to celebrate what's possible, not to breed strife between 'shipper factions.

Oh I know don't worry XD I'm just saying that while I used to ship it, I just can't bring myself to anymore ~____~

I did read it, as you know, and I thought you did an excellent job, darlin'. Especially with what we've talked about in regards to some manifestos--I really enjoyed that you went beyond "why canon supports this" to "why it's a lot of fun to ship." Because yeah, canon events are the basis for whatever whimsical ships people dream up, but in the end, whether it stays a canon-indicated ship is kind of besides the point. I've read a bunch of pairing essays that do a great job of explaining why canon supports it but completely ignore why it's interesting. Not all canon pairings are good, after all (and yes I am still haunted by the ghost of X-Files past.) And this essay deals with both of these points well.

One of the usual problems I have with the way fandom writes threesomes is the way they tend to be two pairings smooshed together so there doesn't have to be any conflict/someone getting left out, and you also highlighted why I/R/R, at its best, is not about IchiRuki vs RenRuki (vs IchiRen), but rather something that transcends those dynamics into something unique and cool all on its own.

Probably I should've posted this longer comment on the actual essay, but when I saw it on my flist yesterday I just really wanted to be first there.

I can read this longer comment here just as well, m'dear. Thank you muchly.

I can't say much I haven't said already before, but I think you bring up a good point--and sometimes it is uplifting and liberating to read the canon as an open work that can support multiple layers of interpretation, including various pairings, and just go to town with what you can find.

Well, you often see threesomes as a way of just conveniently smoothing away love triangles, but you already know that isn't why I wrote this thing. If it's entirely a "what if" ship to begin with, why not work out why and how it really would work?

And you were first! Wooo!

YESSSS. I cannot wait to read this. I never get into IchiRuki vs RenRuki fights that often simply because I LOVE this OT3. I love IchiRuki to death but Renji just steals my heart and if I was a yaoi shipper I would ship IchiRen. I haven't shipped threesomes before but IchiRenRuki definitely won me over. :D Thanks for writing it, it sounds awesome :)

(Okay, I'll shut up and read now.)
