Chapter 369 out
Spit On Your Own God

Locking Urahara away for a month... oh god, *dies from laughter*

Now the question is whether or not one explosion will be enough to take Barragan out...

I'd have to say no.

Thoughts?

So Hacchi proposes the sealing of Urahara in a barrier for a month? Lol, that is quite a carrot! I am glad Soi Fong wasn't just sitting around plotting against him. Plus, it is rather adorable how pleased she is with the offer. We don't see too many smiles from her.

I have high hopes for Barragan's soon demise (how many cocky monologues could he have left?), but it does seem to be coming about rather quickly. Perhaps an injury will trigger some back story and my heart will again feel compelled to sympathize with one of Kubo's villains? (Poor Grimmy ;_; Poor Noitri) Bring on the emotions, Kubo!!! :D

Also . . . Hacchi is totally badass! XD
Wintaerwintaerland on August 7th, 2009 04:31 pm (UTC)
Soi Fon can be quite adorable when she wants (doesn't want) to be. It's no wonder that Yoruichi is so fond of her, lol. And what are the bets that despite Hacchi's promise of sealing Urahara away for a month, Urahara will be able to get out of there fairly quickly? :D

Barragan seems to have the highest number of cocky monologues I've seen so far (or maybe I just have selective memory), but I suppose that he's got to be king of something... might as well be of that, no? I want him to be goooooooone, but despite how hopeful I can get about Bleach at times, I highly doubt a single explosion inside a sealed area will finish off the second espada. A backstory for him would be interesting to see nonetheless.

Hacchi is incredibly awesome! Which just makes me wonder how badass Tessai is...

balladbirdballadbird on August 7th, 2009 05:58 am (UTC)
Seeing as how chapter-ending massive explosions have had a 0% fatality rate in Bleach, thus far, it's a case of "believe it when I see it" regarding Barragan's demise.

From a turn-of-events standpoint, I have surprisingly little to complain about. It was a relatively clever, albeit convenient as always plot that they set up, and it was entertaining enough, I guess.

all of that said, I now need to go on a precautionary rant, ju~st in case that really did kill Barragan off:

From a character/plot development standpoint, it was a repugnant and hasty development. Not only does it pretty much cement Barragan's "stock-villian worth crap to the overall plot, sans to waste time" status if it kills him, it also leaves him both rhetorically and physically underdeveloped (Kubo didn't need to even bother showing his axe, for instance, since he did positively nothing with it, save to wave it threateningly at Omaeda for one page and then forget about it. then there's the complete lack of any other technique, sans his respira, even the ones all arrancar possess.)

More disturbing to me than that (as admitedly, I didn't like Barragan all that much. Pretty dry as far as antagonists go) is that this could possibly set the precedent for how all the espada fights are going to go from now on. Unlike others, I don't think Hacchi's missing mask is nearly as significant as some think. (How would his hollow side help his Kidou? hollows of all power levels lack any sort of it.) and since his only asset is kidou, his shikai is even less important (remember he's not a combat sort) so the fact that he helped Soi while unmasked isn't what disturbs me, it's the one-chapter kill.

There is absolutely no way to possibly spin the one chapter-kill after a surprise resurrection and make it into a good thing. Don't even try. Even the fan-favorite "It's helping us get to the main plot!" argument doesn't work because, really, if he wanted to kill Barragan off one chapter later, with the SAME attack that failed to kill him the first time, he could have just had the first time work and been done with it, so the simple fact that he took an extra chapter means he was wasting time advancing the plot.

If the trend continues, it finally fodderizes the espada, and the one thing that has kept me reading Bleach is my hope that Kubo knows exactly how lame and terrible a storytelling device it would be to have Aizen go "Those espadas were throwaways! Allow me to snap my fingers and summon the never-alluded to and absolutely undeveloped band of VL espadas now! They'll hang around long enough to look menacing, but ultimately receive no development, and certainly won't tie into the overall plot, then they'll be killed by the next batch of protagonists... this series has 50-billion of them anyway. With things looking bad for Kaname that means the only important villians are Gin and I... not that there's any lack of balance there. nope."

A one-chapter kill will be especially hard to buy with Starrk, considering that he was ALWAYS three steps ahead of Shunsui and Ukitake when the fought. At least Barragan and Harribel were starting to flag during their first fights.

*** /rant

Bear in mind, that whole thing there was a PRECAUTIONARY rant, based on the possibility, which is marginally small, that Barragan was defeated there. As such, please take it with a grain of salt.

...unless Barragan is really dead two weeks from now... in which case I meant every word!

What's with Barragan in his ressurecion reminding me of the song "I Pledge Allegiance" by Nate Dogg?

Maybe it's his Badassery that takes physical form in the whole 'aging' thing?
Wintaerwintaerland on August 7th, 2009 05:08 pm (UTC)
I've never actually listened to that song, so I wouldn't know :/

Barragan's badassery is currently being slightly obscured by his pompous monologues, so while I don't believe that he's dead, I am hoping that his jaw got exploded off so as to impede further speeches from him

Hacchi is awesome. That said, if Barragan is killed off so easily it really does come as a letdown, and I worry how the Harribel and Stark fights will be presented.

I would have preferred updates on all the fights in progress, rather than having the chapter focus only on the Barragan fight, but that's just a minor complaint. As opposed to the lack of manga time for HM and poor Ishida, who's been one-armed and avoiding solid food for what seems like years now.

Eagerly awaiting the Tousen/Komamura/Hisagi talkfest fight.
Wintaerwintaerland on August 7th, 2009 05:12 pm (UTC)
No, I would have to disagree. Hacchi is extremely awesome :D

If Barragan gets offed that easily then I'm going to have to beg an answer from Kubo as to why he had him show off the huge axe (that's been conspicuously absent) in much earlier chapters.

Hang in there Ishida, we'll get back to you soon! Maybe... with 'soon' being a relative word

I'm still holding out hope for Kensei knocking Hisagi out of the picture and taking his place in the talk--er... fight

SOI FONG. I want to SQUISH HER CHEEKS, she is so immature and adorable. Really, this is just another reaction from the traumatic divide at the end of TBTP. Lisa missed Shunsui, Yamamoto feels vaguely guilty, and Soi is PISSY AS ALL HELL.

So Urahara told the Vizards about her bankai, eh? How does he know about it? After all, she says herself she doesn't much like using it. Well, she's not surprised that Urahara told them, either, so I guess it's from way back when.

I like how her mental image of him is the smiling lying loon.

As with a lot of Bleach, I liked the chapter best after the scans were out. It's still not plot, but way for Hachi to show that kidou really can be useful.
Quirkygrlmshepnj on August 7th, 2009 11:33 am (UTC)
Honestly, I find Soi Fon's grudge against Uruhara childish for a Captain. Didn't Yamamotoi tell them to fight with everything they have? And she's holding out for petty reasons.

I suppose the deal makes for an amusing moment in the manga, but if Hacchi fulfills his promise, Kisuke's going to be out of commission at a critical time. If the plan doesn't succeed in killing Baragan, does that nullify the deal?

Now, Hacchi is awesome! I'm a fan of characters who contribute in ways other than fighting because I find the fight scenes only interesting in small doses.

My two main thoughts on this chap:

1. If, as he himself said, Orihime's powers are similar to Hachi's, then that girl needs to Get Ta Training, because her being able to do even half the stuff Hachi can do would be... well, probably too damn powerful for her character, considering she can already raise the dead. (Which makes me wonder if Hachi can do that, too. He sure brought Tsubaki back fast enough.)

2. Everyone else seems to think Soi Fon is adorable, but I want to smack her upside the head with a 2x4. Just like Ikkaku, this is yet another, even MOAR glaring example of high-ranking Shinigami putting their selfish pride and petty jealousy/hatred ahead of The Mission. So Soi hates Urahara. Fine. I'm sure we can all figure out why pretty darn easily. But for her to ask Hachi to disable the ONE GUY who has the ability to open gargantas and whip up fake KK-towns while half their forces are stuck in Hueco Mundo and the future of SS is looking mighty shaky... I just can't forgive that. Yeah, I'm sure this will provide some interesting plot twist or something which I'll love later on, but right now, her request is so utterly selfish and stupid it makes me want to pull my hair. GAH!

Not happy with Soi Fon, right now. Nope, not at all.

I think it's rather heavily implied that by tommorrow everything will be finished, one way or another, so it really doesn't seem that irresponsible.

*yawns* This chapter was so boooring. Nothing interesting happened or was said, apart maybe from this Soi Fon - Urahara thing. Soi Fon has no reason to love Kisuke - first he stole her Yoruichi and then started to gossip about her bankai...
Wintaerwintaerland on August 7th, 2009 06:13 pm (UTC)
The one-sided Soi Fon vs. Urahara amuses me to no end, so while people are raging against Soi Fon for her selfishness and pride, I'm just laughing.

I think if it weren't for Hacchi's showing off of his abilities, this chapter would be extremely boring

If Kubo does end up killing him off this easily, I want to ask him exactly why he even made the character in the first place, because seriously, Barragan has so much potential character development that hasn't even been touched upon!

Maybe Kubo will have Barragan rot away. After all, he may represent old age and his powers may be rooted in death, but he himself is still an espada and can still die and be affected by time

The title page was awesome. Hachi was badassed.

If Barragan is dead it's ridiculous but...

By rights Kubo's top espada should be virtually unkillable and somehow imprisoning them or exiling them to another dimension is the only thing that makes sense. If they aren't VL then this is all idiocy because bringing in a batch of undeveloped VL now would be, just like Ballad said, really poor plotting. Especially if they are summarily killed off.
Wintaerwintaerland on August 7th, 2009 06:18 pm (UTC)
Hacchi was very badass and makes me wonder just how powerful Tessai is...

Barragan and the rest of the remaining espada (except for possibly Yammy) have so much potential that if Kubo kills them off so easily, he's just wasting what could have been wonderful chapters. While I don't believe that they can't be killed, I do believe that some members of the Gotei 13 and Vaizards are going to have to be sacrificed in order to kill the top espadas

Funny as her hero-worship of Yoruichi can be, I do wish that she would finally grow a backbone for herself when it comes to her goddess and see her as a person instead of someone to be worshipped. That would make for great character development

By the time I got to the end of the chapter I didn't even care any more if Barragan was alive or dead. It meant little of nothing to me, because all I could think about was how much I wanted to kick SoiFon's ass across the page.

Just when I was finally starting to like SoiFon. Kubo even managed to garner my sympathy for her insecurities and foibles. Now... now I'm just really looking forward to Yoruichi giving her the bitch slap of a lifetime.

I loved watching Iba take Ikkaku down a peg with his little speech, but I'm hoping Yoruichi is a little more pro-active in her beat down of stupidity. Because I can not see Yoruichi taking this turn of events well at all.

That is of course assuming Hacchi even has the ability to seal Urahara, or wasn't lying his ass off.
nehalenianehalenia on August 7th, 2009 03:36 pm (UTC)
This. My feelings exactly. Tho I too think Hachi agreed to that too easily, so either Urahara will be able to walk right out of the box or there's some other 'fine print' that will leave Soifon steaming and Yoruichi laughing.

Am I the only one who thinks Soi would have been going bankai even without the deal? For me Hachi and the deal has more to do with humorous purposes than anything *shrugs*.

Not advance in plot but for me it was pretty fun, I like to have chapters like this from time to time when the volumes are out, and graphically was great, I specially like the chapter page. Anyway, right now I don't care too much about the Espadas, I'll be glad if the plot moves before Christmas XD.

The main highlight for me was watching Hacchi pull out all those kidou spells one after another

Wow, Hacchi's kido is a lot like fancy architecture! Really neat. I was impressed. NOT impressed by Barragan's one-note-villain dialogue. Makes me feel sure he's about to be obliterated. As terrifying as his power has been, I'm tired of him and ready to see him go.

I get the controversy about Soi-Fon, but seeing how it was HACCHI who came up with the idea to imprison Urahara makes me laugh even harder. He knows her SO WELL. Plus, guys? This is URAHARA we're talking about, not someone sweet and innocent. Seeing him squirm over this will be funny, even though you know Yoruichi won't let the deal go down.

Now two weeks to wait... D:

I feel the same way. That was high-horsed 'monologuing' (per 'The Incredibles') of the first order and I see it as preceding a huge downfall. And yes, even tho it will make him a one-note baddie and there will be much out-cry against Kubo, I'm just sick of him. I mean, I'm at the point that if this *doesn't* kill him, I'm almost ready to stop reading the FKK arc until he IS dead. (OK, I know that's an empty threat, but really, I feel the same as you: Sick. Of. Him.)

I'd much rather have more attention on Halibel and Starrk and their fights.

I know right? No need to take it so seriously, and Soi Fon, despite her hard exterior, is a good person. I personally find her childishness when it comes to Yoruichi somewhat amusing, despite my wish that Kubo would do some nice character development on her by making her see Yoruichi as the person she actually is instead of the goddess she's making her out to be

Hacchi is just awesome, which makes me think, how much more awesome is Tessai?
