A thousand thank yous for posting this up. I'm such a ulquihime fangirl. XD

Anyway, I added the English translation to the pages and posted them in the discussion of mangafox here: http://forums.mangafox.com/threads/272367-UNMASKED-A-Chapter-About-Ulquiorra-Posted-HERE-! I hope you don't mind; I was just sharing the love :)

So, some stuff I have been thinking about, and wanted to toss out there for discussion, if anyone's game. Also, I should admit that I'm undercaffeinated this morning, so may not be at my most coherent or anywhere near eloquent.

1. When Ulquiorra awakens on Orihime's couch (I'm quite sure he is laying down), he is as surprised as she is. Look at how wide his eye is, compared to Page 3 or Page 11! I think this is really interesting...is he surprised that he fell asleep on her couch? Or is he surprised to find Orihime 18 inches from his face, looking at him? Both? I've said elsewhere, I'm still so WTF?-in-a-happy-way about him nodding off on her couch -- was it intentional? Of all the places to go to take a nap, he goes to his prisoner's cell? We know the Espada each have their own quarters, so why not his own room?

2. When Ulquiorra first sees the Bush of Void-ness, he says it's the *first* time his eyes have been captured. To me, this implies that his eyes were later captured again...and Kubo drew so much UlquiHime eyesmex that it can totally be inferred that Orihime captured Ulquiorra's eyes as well. This is something that comes up again and again in fanfic, so it is nice to be able to maybe stretch canon slightly to confirm this.

3. Orihime looks so crestfallen when Ulquiorra tells her to not address him as one would a human. Initially I thought her sadness was due to a sense of rejection, but now I am of the opinion that she's becoming aware of Ulquiorra's certainty that he is so much without a shred of humanity that he refuses to even accept a basic human courtesy (though -kun *is* rather familiar). I think she senses something from him that causes her sadness. He's also very specifically completely turned his back to her, which I don't recall him ever doing elsewhere in the manga. His posture is sort of defeated, too, I think...we never see Ulquiorra slouch! The whole exchange is much deeper, I think, than is apparent in just the words.

I think there may have been more stuff I wanted to touch on, but bah! I can't remember!

To Cez and Mz D..thank you so much for all your work!

I just realized Orihime attempted a "rape kiss again"!!!!!
Sooo......Ichigo's sleeping form is not the only one she finds fascinating, eh. Too bad he woke up. I'd like to think she found him irresistible and was about to plant one on hi

Why was he sleeping in her room anyway? Did he think that her room is their love nest? ^o^ Sure looks like it:O

Orihime is carrying a tray--Did they share a meal before he got "The Itis" and fell asleep? They look so much like they're "playing house" Orihime is the Waifu and Ulquiorra is the Husband
This should shut the detractors up once and for all!!! "Ulquiorra-Kun" is not the monster they make him out to be. Orihime saw him as a "MAN" and not a beast. Hell it looks like she had hard time remembering that he was her jailer. She looks hurt that he said he wasn't a human.
I have been reading posts that says, we're all delusional, but how can be be anything else??! Kubo keeps feeding our delusions....and I LOVE IT!!!!!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!!!! This just made my UlquiHime shipper heart melt

you continue to confuse me- and even now- i still don't understand ulqihime- because no matter how i looked at it- the moments on the dome- the famous slap that she gave him, and this comic now.

all i see is the potential well of feelings that ulquiorra has for hime, the romantic slant is there. But orihime never reciprocated with the same intensity, or romantic undertone.

its all ulquiorra, thats what its always been, his death, the slap, this dojin
its all about ulquiorra's feelings- hime's feelings regarding him is never once shown.
hinodeh: look me in the eye allenhinodeh on June 10th, 2011 09:35 am (UTC)
Don't you contradict yourself? You say that Orihime never feels as intensely for Ulq as he does for her, and yet, at the end you claim that her feelings for him are never shown. How would you know her feelings for him if they were never shown?

As it is, all Orihime ships are currently one-sided.

What matters, though, is how KT chooses to portray this one-sidedness. Ulquiorra changes in good and meaningful ways by knowing her, and this comic strengthens that notion even more. It also proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that she did care for him, felt comfortable in his presence, worried about him and saw humanity in him. Before that, some people disputed that and said that she felt only pity during thr hand reach.

Besides, one character watching another sleep is very intimate. On Ulquiorra's side because he is usually so rigid and guarded and on Orihime's side because she must have watched him for a longer time judging by the fact that she was startled by seeing him awaken. This whole trope is often used with couples. They may not be a couple, but KT basically chooses to give them a scene that has the intimacy of a couple.
Even with one-sided love, there can be degrees of closeness, and for a one-sided, enemy/enemy couple, despite this being pre-handreach they are shown as startlingly close in this comic, to the point where even both Western and Japanese Ulquihime fans where shocked.

Pre or post 354"Heart"?
Just a thought.
This doesn't look like prisoner/jailer relationship at all.
But if you assume that this happened after the Dome, it makes sense. You know...

Almost turn into ash -> Orihime uber healing powers -> fall unconscious/asleep due to massive energy loss -> flashback -> he wakes up

How about that?

Sorry for my Enguish. ^_^

Re: Pre or post 354"Heart"?
Don't think so. If this were post-354, Ulquiorra would no longer insists on his nihilistic outlook and probably also not reject being addressed as "-kun". This is definitely something that took place after Orihime got her dress, but probably before she slapped him.

More Ulquihime?!!! I'm soooo happy to see this *claws screen for more*
I thought the back story was perfect for Ulquiorra, treating him like an outcast, no wonder he doesn't understand the heart or know happiness.
Orihime seems as cheerful as always here, she's feeling calm enough to be herself.
He teleports away pretty quick after telling her not to refer him as a human, i think this effected him in some way, too bad we only see his back, Orihime looks sad after hes left the room
WE NEED MORE Ulquihime!!!

Thank you for posting this. An interesting insight into Ulquiorra's character and what it was like for him before he joined Aizen. I thought it was odd that Kubo did not do any flashbacks for him in the manga, given how prominently he was featured in the Arrancar Arc; I was curious to know his background. He truly embodies the attributes of his kind. He is callous, thoughtless, soulless, lifeless and heartless. He represents nihilism to boot. In essence, he is akin to a void or an endless abyss, for everything he sees, touches, feels and hears is nothing. It is all insignificant to him like he says in the backstory: "The things reflected in my eyes have no meaning. The things that could not be reflected in my eyes, do not exist."

It's also cool to see how Orihime fared being around him and it's great that she tried to make things more friendly between them by treating the Arrancar as if he were a fellow human she was getting to know. It's no surprise he tells her not to do so because hollows and humans are sworn enemies. Heck, humans are their food (alive or dead). XD

I think Orihime was extremely courageous in doing what she did; it was he who kidnapped her after all and he is inhuman, unfeeling and uncaring too so to be able to behave the way she does to him in the backstory is pretty amazing, if you ask me. Orihime sure has a strong will. She demonstrated that their two opposing species could mutually respect, understand and interact with one another despite their vast differences through showing facets of humanity which even hollows such as Ulquiorra could never hope to obtain or emulate: clemency, kindness and compassion.

Excuse for my inability to be concise
He is callous, thoughtless, soulless, lifeless and heartless.
While I have nothing toward the "callous" and "heartless" part regarding to Ulquiorra's past, I wonder what you meant about the "thoughtless, soulless, lifeless" part since this backstory was narrated ALL IN Ulquiorra's THOUGHT. Ulquiorra was technically DEAD and a HOLLOW - SOUL that had no HEART. Can I take by "thoughtless, soulless, lifeless" you mean Ulquiorra was a "foolish, boring, listless" character? Certainly, for the one who embodies nihility as his aspect of death, no one can understand his depth as the character who felt nothing.

It was ironic that nihility of his was blasted away given his future development whereas he found meaning to reached out for Orihime and could see the "heart" that didn't exist when seeing her reaching back at him.

It's no surprise he tells her not to do so because hollows and humans are sworn enemies.
He told her not to call him as such one would call, a human NOT because "hollows and humans are sworn enemies" (as in your opinion) FYI, it isn't even right when hollow and shinigami are supposed sworn enemies (while Ulquiorra usually saw human as trash). BUT because Ulquiorra saw himself not a human for Orihime to use suffix -kun onto like she would call a human. Because if Ulquiorra really thought that "hollows and humans are sworn enemies" and Orihime shouldn't call him as "Ulquiorra-kun", he would never tell her to call him "Ulquiorra", but "Ulquiorra-sama" instead so he could demean her value as human - an enemy of hollow. Yet, he told her to call him "Ulquiorra only" mean he saw her as equal and tell her to treat him equally as his comrade.

I think Orihime was extremely courageous in doing what she did; it was he who kidnapped her after all and he is inhuman, unfeeling and uncaring too so to be able to behave the way she does to him in the backstory is pretty amazing, if you ask me.
I think it's normal IN CHARACTER of Orihime. Nothing like "extremely courageous". They did act dorky toward each other and Orihime never showed any fear around Ulquiorra in HM arc. Well, I guess compare to other characters' behaviors toward Ulquiorra, Orihime was pretty amazing. Who could slap her captor like that when she must have fully known that he could kill her in an eyebat? But we all knew those facts in the manga, it's just the backstory showed us another layer of Orihime's character toward Ulquiorra that Orihime saw and treated Ulquiorra like a human - the same way she regarded her male friends. As she watched him sleeping in her room without any self-defense and even worried about him, certainly that she didn't see him as "inhuman, unfeeling and uncaring" judging on how depressed her face was when she saw Ulquiorra rejected the idea of her calling/treating him as "human".

She demonstrated that their two opposing species could mutually respect, understand and interact with one another despite their vast differences through showing facets of humanity which even hollows such as Ulquiorra could never hope to obtain or emulate: clemency, kindness and compassion.
They are opposite attracted yet complement each other. Strangely enough, Ulquiorra isn't the only hollow that interacted with Orihime (albeit he had the most interaction moments with her) Yet the hollows that Orihime ever show such "clemency, kindness & compassion" toward are 1. her brother and 2. Ulquiorra. You can say that it was them whom she gave out her "heart" and was entrusted with "heart".
phoenixmiko on July 1st, 2011 11:57 pm (UTC)
I'm no UlquiHime fan so I do not view their interaction in the backstory as romantic. But I do see it as two differing enemy species trying to acknowledge and form an understanding of one another despite the barriers besetting them; it is an attempt to build tolerance, respect and civility. As far as I know, Ulquiorra and Orihime are the only two characters in the manga to try and do this and manage to do so successfully. Their interactions proved to be good development for their growth as characters and for their respective species. It showed that hollows and humans do have the potential to acknowledge and respect each other's existences.
jenny_jadejenny_jade on July 7th, 2011 06:40 am (UTC)
I understand where you come from. There's no need to view their interaction in the backstory as romantic. Since sleeping in the capture's room and on her own couch just seemed OOC and inexplanable for Ulquiorra to do so (Not to mention the fact Orihime watched him sleep). As much as you generalized Ulquiorra and Orihime as in wide term for hollow and human, it pretty much symbolized for their interaction as such. Because they are the only humanxhollow ship in Bleach had such depth and potential connection that could overcome prejuide barrier.
