Chapter 393 is out!
http://mangastream.com/read/bleach/393-59/1

A chapter where I actually like Yama-ji? That I was not expecting. The old guy really went up in my books for this, and even though the idea of losing some well-beloved characters is harsh, when Yama-ji said that he meant to take down Aizen with him, and that everyone there was prepared to die to see it through, I was like "Whoaaa..." I think this might be the first time I've ever felt the Gotei 13 was a truly cohesive group with a single purpose. It also makes me wonder if this is what guided the old guys choices for what captains to send to HM and which ones to go with him. I think the loyalty of each of the captains there in FKT is unquestioned, and while I wouldn't question Unohana or Byakuya either, Mayuri and Kenpachi are both wild cards who are only loyal to their own desires -- research and battle.

As for Ichigo... just WTF is going on here? I don't much blame him for standing back and staring when Old Yama is in full flame -- it had Ukitake and Shunsui both almost petrified back in the SS arc, and they are much older and more experienced than Ichigo -- but the whole 'get back, boy, this isn't your fight' just makes me scratch my head. Talk about mixed messages. The guy keeps getting shuttled back and forth between "We don't need you to fight our fights" to "Hey, you're our only hope!" and back to "This isn't your fight." Dear Kubo, please make up your mind. Which is it? I'm getting damn confused, and so is Ichigo, I'll bet.

As for Wonderwyce... dude, we always knew there was something special about the kid but YIKES. He was made specifically to take out Yama-ji? While I don't like the implications of that on an "OMG everyone's DOOMED!" level, I gotta say it certainly adds a level of tension I didn't feel before. Like, just what all can Aizen do with the Hougyoku?

My assessment: O_O Damn good chapter. Much better than I expected, for sure.

ETA: BTW, WTF is Hinamori? Like, the one Hitsu stabbed but who now seems to have vanished?

My respect for Yama-jii went up... Then down... Then... Jeesh, Wonderwiess exists solely to destroy Yamamoto? That's especially douchey of Aizen, since we know what he'd to to little derpycar if Yama is defeated...

Am I the only one hoping Wonder will kill Aizen instead for offing Tousen?

I did end up feeling a little sympathy for Yamajii: he looked completely shocked by this development. Imagine how hard it is to shock someone that old! Also I thought it was neat how Aizen did flat-out admit who was stronger, so now the debates over that can hush up.

Wonderboy is totally a moth. I see why he reminds people of Giger's Alien too, but aaaaah, I love this form. The frame where he's shadowed and you can see THROUGH HIS HEAD was so chilling. Also kind of reminded me of Pazuzu. Hm. Moth or locust? I like moth better.

(sorry, babbling. i really liked the chapter and feel a bit alone about that right now.)

Don't feel alone. I thought the chapter rocked. In typical Kubo style, he took a character I don't care all that much for and added enough depth to make me respect him. When Yama-ji said that every member of the Gotei 13 there was prepared to die to take Aizen down, I got a little chill. Oh, and Aizen leaving them alive and broken so they could see watch while he took down Yamamoto? That was chilling. Chilling, and perfectly Aizen. Whew.

When Ichigo and Unohana were leaving Hueco Mundo Ichigo explained that he thinks that his clothing represents his current reiatsu level. Since he's been standing around doing nothing, it probably replenished, so voila -> he's fully clothed again :)

Mad props to Yamaji. The man was willing to kill himself and incinerate a good chunk of his gotei if it meant taking out Aizen. Just, wow.

I got chills up my arms after reading this chapter and Yama's pwntasticness. Damn you Kubo sensei, for making me cheer for yet another character who I never cared for earlier.

And I laughed out loud at Ichigo and his moronic buh! face.

Well... That was worth the wait. Always thought Wonderweiss was something special, and i was pretty sure one of his powers was shutting down other people's powers... but artificially created purely as a off switch to kill Yamamoto>.<.

Yamamoto was so cool in this chapter, grabbing Aizen sword as he stab him and pointing out the weakness of his Zanpakutō is that it doesn't effect the ability to sense Reiatsu ....

I always expected Yama-jii to die here, so... the fact that he wants to take out everyone else with him pisses me off. How is that a freaking plan? As long as Aizen dies, it's worth it--How about no? And who would take care of SS if everyone's gone? Unohana and Ichigo? And whoever else in HM that survives? And I thought the 'Ichigo is the only one that can defeat Aizen' was the worst plan ever. I've never liked Wonderweiss, and that Resurrecion is bad joke, but if he defeats Yama, I'm not going to cry... I've always disliked him since SS anyways, so the quicker the better.

And Ichigo, you could at least go pick up a pizza. Where's Ulquiorra with some 'Trash' talk when you need him...

Of course, there are uplifting moments: Hitsu getting his leg and arm cut off, Omaeda probably making his secret entrance, Unohana letting Yama get himself killed so she can finally be Commander, Aizen being the BAMF that he is, etc. Ahhh, good times.

LOL Hinamori is still missing

Wow, I'm really liking Yama-jii again.

But who else is thinking that Ichigo and Unohana will take out WW so Yama-jii can get back to fighting Aizen? We have been waiting so long to see Unohana in combat, she scares the piss out of everyone for SOME reason. And like I said in the spoilers, Kubo loves the clash of a character's outer appearance with their true self--Unohana may look cute and cuddly but I'm betting she has a bankai that is anything but.

NO!

Unohana will clearly take down Yama-jii HERSELF like she's been waiting to do all this time, and join Aizen in his quest for the throne as QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE.

Kenpachi will take this as an excuse to invade the Royal Realm and destroy everything in his path until he gets to the throne room and can finally fight...

...HER. Because Aizen is just a forethought compared to Unohana.

Though I also wouldn't mind for the new, inevitable rescue arc that we're about to get in three, two, one... to be about THE SEXY CHADO. :D

Give me the Chado, Kubo.

Excelent chapter, it was worth the wait. I can't blame Ichigo for not taking action, he just look so very unprepared, and we know it's true. The fact that Yama-jii is willing to sacrifice himself along with many of the Gotei 13 officers is very beliveable. Though it kinda contradict SoiFon's speech to Ichigo; "Don't think that we're risking our lives on this fight. This is a fight to survive." Ichigo said he belived in them but everyone fell and now he is told to back off. In the end it will all depend on Ichigo and that's a huge burden his shoulder.

WW is next in line to be taken down and it would be nice to see Unohana taking over the fight if Yama-jii is beaten.

ok, you know I skipped a good 50 chapters or so before I came back to bleach, but honestly, why do they care that much? I'd get it if it was the vizards because they lost all that had but the captains? why are they sacrificing them selves so much and so early in the game? with the exception of a few of them, why do they hate aizen so much?

Well, if I can give my two cents on this matter...

There was a time when, some amount of time after Aizen's betrayal, Yama-chan stated that the importance of taking him down is simply that "the Gotei's pride is at stake."

It was at that point that he became a character that could not be redeemed in my sight. Pride? Putting everything on the line for pride is the same as saying that as long as you feel good about yourself, everything's fine.

Killing all of your subordinates as well as yourself, overlooking things that should be unpardonable crimes (all of which were done by the Seireitei administration), all kinds of things. And what has been on his mind this whole time? He cares about the pride of his organization.

He cares not about the lives he's in charge of, and the responsibility that comes with that. No one can measure up to him in power so he calls anyone below captain level a mere infant and casts them aside. He doesn't care what happens to them. And as for the captains? They're not in a much better position, as we can see.

Without these so-called infants, the balance of entire worlds would be thrown out of whack and everything would be over. Or is Yama-chan somehow powerful enough to keep the balance himself. No, if he was he would not have formed this organization. Or did he start the Gotei just for the sake of his pride, so that he would be able to gather some infants to crowd around him and call him almighty leader?

When he called Shunsui and Jyuushiro his students, and then tried to kill them, I could only wonder... Because they have strayed from the path you set out for them, they are to be killed? They can no longer be called students? As far as we know, these are the only two in the entirety of the Bleach universe that Yama-chan has some personal attachment to. He will resolve to kill them in an instant for the sake of his pride. "The time for talking is over" says he. In an instant, the respect he got from me dropped a lot more.

No, no screw the fact that the C46's movements have been extremely questionable and how strange it is that a captain was stuck to the wall out of nowhere... Only Unohana and Hitsugaya care enough about something like that.

You see because the C46 are not to be questioned. Whatever they decide, he will follow it without a second thought.

He is a leader, yet he has been led for so long. Though I'm not sure which of them is worse, the C46 or Yama-chan.

You can call it naive, I really don't care, but I firmly believe that... In comparison to life, pride is nothing. In comparison to the individuals that make up the Gotei 13, the organization itself is nothing.

A leader is someone who bears the responsibility of the lives of all those who rely on his direction. Any leader who underestimates this responsibility for whatever reason is scum. Pride causes people to treat those under them like tools, without regard for the responsibility they bear as leader. Pride causes wars, and lives to be ruined. It is all because one person believes they are better than everyone else.

Yes, Yama-chan is no better than Aizen. At least Aizen will admit it though. He has already said he needs no leader, he will stand at the very top and he cares not for his subordinates. They will not be able to rely on him. Because they choose to, he decides they are fools. And he stands on this pedestal of fools deciding he is the king.

You can say what you want but I believe Yama-chan is exactly the same.

Can any of his subordinates rely on him either? Man, screw that. The whole time they're getting wiped out he's busy thinking of sacrificing them and everything else for his pride.
silverkun2silverkun2 on February 25th, 2010 04:02 am (UTC)
(continuing on)

So here we have the two biggest idiots in all of Bleach, fighting each other to see who can be the bigger idiot.

At least Aizen can manage to make his idiocy look badass. He managed to make me enjoy watching it. That's really saying something considering the stuff he did. I think the reason I enjoyed watching it is because I've wanted for so long to see the good guys face a problem they can't just immediately overcome. I've wanted to see things look truly dire for once. It makes things suspenseful.

But Yama-chan is boring to me I suppose. I always see him as nothing more than an obstacle. An obstacle that must be overcome in order to make things right in the Bleach world. Someone who must either die or leave in some way for things to progress. No, he will never learn from his mistakes. He's an old man who has been set in his ways for thousands of years. There will be no character development for him. He just has to be gotten rid of somehow.

"They are all prepared to die"? I wonder. I wonder if that's really what they said to him. If that's really what they all feel. Each one of these captains is another leader who bears the responsibility of yet more lives. Because of that responsibility, they do not have the right to simply throw their lives away like so.

Oh, how quick we forget about the Vizards, by the way. Were they also prepared to die? Do they not also have nothing to do with the Gotei? Yama-chan will take the time to tell Ichigo to go away simply because he has nothing to do with the Gotei but here we have all these other people in the same boat as Ichigo dying.

Ah, hey. Do you remember, once upon a time, Seireitei's administration ordered these same guys killed? Yeah, that time when they decided to fear their loyal subordinates and try to put all the blame on someone else. That time when they decided that someone else had certainly forced them to throw away the responsibility of their subordinates' lives. Mmhm. This is maturity at its finest right here.

So Yama-chan, who never managed to let go of the C46's idiotic ways even after they were all killed, probably still feels this way. I bet he never learned from that mistake.

That it was not Aizen who truly betrayed the Vizards, but their own country. Their own home.

The fact that they underwent hollowification is a pretty big deal, but when you compare it to losing your home... Losing everything, being betrayed by everyone you relied on, being forced to live in exile for 100 years... Dang, it doesn't look like a very big deal anymore.

I mean, not a single one died from it. Not a single one has lost their sanity yet. There was indeed hope to be found, but just because they didn't know this for certain they couldn't be bothered.

PS. Aizen's hypnosis doesn't affect the ability to sense reiatsu? But I thought that everyone subconsciously exuded some amount of reiatsu, even when not in battle. Surely someone would have been able to sense that it's Aizen. Surely someone would have recognized that Hinamori's reiatsu was emanating from Aizen's position. I don't understand this...

on the one hand, I'm glad that Kubo made it official that Ichigo can not beat Yamaji. I was getting really irritated with Ichigo powering up and everyone else just depending on him. Kubo made so many great characters that I feel could have had more room but I digress.

also, it is kind of werid for the pace to all of a sudden 'jump up to speed' like that since the last couple of chapters were so slow and abstract
silverkun2silverkun2 on February 25th, 2010 07:31 am (UTC)
The last couple of chapters, where everyone was getting massacred, were slow?

...Well, can't say I know how this chapter was any faster than those. I really liked it recently. But back before we came back to Hueco Mundo around chapter 380 or w/e, it was pretty boring IMO. That time where we were just stuck in FKT for a long time without very much happening. At least, it seemed that way to me.

But yeah, Ichigo obviously could never have beaten Yama. It was obvious even before this chapter. And we already knew he could never beat Aizen. That's another reason I like Aizen. Because he can't defeat Aizen, Aizen is the only thing that has kept Ichigo from stepping everywhere he pleases and just doing whatever he wants. I was very irritated when he actually managed to kill Ulquiorra. Well, technically that was his inner hollow, or at least according to him it was. Still, the fact that he killed Ulquiorra is just absurd to me. By all rights, he should have never been able to. When he transformed into that monster, he made Ulquiorra look like a good guy. And that's pretty dang hard to do!

I think it's probable that the reason Wonderweiss has the cognitive ability of a small child is because of whatever Aizen did to him. I dunno if Aizen created him or just modified him (all that was said is that he's the first "modded arrancar"), but apparently what he did screwed up WW bad. Of course, if Aizen somehow created WW in the first place, then he was never not screwed up (lol double negative).

Then again, if Aizen really did create WW, his lack of intelligence might be due to the fact that Aizen was unable to completely reproduce the human mind. Or heart for that matter.

or Aizen didn't intend to give WW any intelligence from the beginning. why give a brain to someone whose power can prevail or, at least, rival Yamaji's power?

The chapter was another one I would deem average, based in my biased standards. I admit my favorite part was Aizen admitting Yama was stronger. The announcement itself doesn't make me feel anything one way or the other, but the opulent bickering of the fanboys about whether Aizen was above Yama or not was one of the most tiring parts of reading the pre-chapter spoilers.
